Seligen Fraulein

Seligen Fraulein are a type of wild woman or forest spirit. Some say there are very few of them left as they are hunted by to near extintion by the Wild Manner who seek to destroy them. They can ony be safe by sheltering on a tree stump which has had three crosses cut onto it. They are said to reward woodcutters who are kind enough to mark trees in this way. They protect trees animals and deer from hunters. Farmers say that since they have been driven out the land has been less fertile. They will flee if a man should tough their hair or swear in their presence, it they are struck, given clothes or called by their true name. Aparently the term selig is one that used to be used by the catholic church in germany to describe a person one step below sainthood and this imples that the fairies are, or were considered to be benevolent honoured creatures.
